When the ore was exhausted, the poor miners turned to carving and turning everyday articles and toys, as well as presents and ornaments, because they could not afford to buy such beautiful things. In small, humble homes in the forest of the Erzgebirge, nutcrackers, smokers, carved animals, pyramids and later Christmas tree ornaments were made. This is how the very popular wood-working tradition of the Erzgebirge was developed.
